The San Antonio Brass Band (SABB) competed in the North American Brass Band Association’s (NABBA) Championship Contest held on April 6-7 at the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This year’s contest included 39 bands and more than 1,300 musicians. NABBA works for the promotion and development of the brass band movement in North America.
The purpose of the SABB is to rehearse and perform literature in the tradition of the "Brass Band" style, which consists of many traditional compositions such as marches, classical transcriptions, and "pops" literature, as well as pieces composed specifically for competitions.
NABBA 2018 is the first competition the SABB attended since forming just one year ago. The organization chose to compete in the Section 1 category, consisting of twelve other highly competitive bands from all across North America. The SABB was the first band from Texas, and the southern United States in general, to enter the competition. On April 7, all Section 1 bands performed the same composition (“Diversions on a Bass Theme” by George Lloyd) as well as a composition of choice, which for the SABB was “Year of the Dragon” by Philip Sparke. As a result of SABB’s hard work and excellent preparation by conductor Dr. John Carroll, the judges awarded first place to the SABB with a total of 294 points out of 300. Second place was awarded to 2017’s first place winners the Weston Silver Band from Toronto, and third place honors went to the Dublin Silver Band from Ohio. This is a notable honor for SABB to achieve, especially during the Tricentennial year of the City of San Antonio.
With bands and musicians covering 15 states and Canada, and ages ranging from school-age youth to senior citizens, NABBA has become a true force championing brass bands across North America and across the world. The SABB is comprised of current and retired members of the San Antonio Symphony, USAF Band of the West and the 323rd Army Band, university professors, music educators and private teachers, as well as real estate professionals, philosophers, IT system engineers, homemakers, law school students, and others, creating a unique mix of volunteer musicians.
The next performance for the SABB will be on Wednesday, May 30 at 7:30 pm as part of the 43rd
Annual International Trumpet Guild Conference being held at the Regency Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency, 123 Losoya St., in downtown San Antonio. The concert will feature International Trumpet soloists including Bryan Appleby-Wineberg, Tom Hutchinson, Rex Richardson, Wiff Rudd, & Philip Smith.
